Slow Food in Korea

by | 01-02-2016 22:26

As you are all aware, slow food has been created as opposed to fast food. The beginning of Slow Food organization was founded in 1986 in Italy as a resistance to opening McDonald store in Rome and then spread worldwide. In Korea, many people become aware of the spirit of slow food and there have been many restaurants as well as farmers who grow plants and vegetables in organic way from seeding to harvest. The main idea of slow food might have originated from the ecological harmony from our old local community. In particular, many of traditional Korean foods are fermented which may be said to be slow food. Kimchi and bean paste are the most popular fermented foods in Korea and more and more people in Korea became interested in these traditional foods and organically grown foods rather than pizza, hamburger and sodas. Also, there are many direct transaction marketplace where many products as well as vegetables directly are sold by farmers. Next week in Korea is lunar New Year's day, and there will be many direct transaction groceries in many places organized by local government to promote local food and slow way of life.

Like a snail, the symbol of slow food, the goal of the slow food movement represents sustainable foods and promotion of local small businesses as opposed to globalization of agricultural products. Localization and being slow may be the ways for us to be able to protect our planet.
