![]() Environmental Organizations are bodies that work towards protection of the environment through a number of ways including awareness campaigns, rallies, large scale tree plantations etc. An environmental organization may be local, regional or international. In this article, I would be briefing about some international environmental organizations. International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) It is an international organization working towards nature conservation and judicious and sustainable use of resources. It is involved in various activities including environmental data gathering and research, education etc. IUCN's mission is to "influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable." It was officially instituted on 5th October 1948, in Fontainebleau, France when member nations signed the formal act. Its present Director General and President are Inger Andersen and Zhang Xinsheng. It is most commonly known for publishing the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Greenpeace It is a non-governmental environmental organization with activists in over forty countries and headquarters in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It was founded by Canadian environmental activists in 1971. Its goal is "To ensure the ability of the Earth to nurture life in all its diversity" and focuses its campaigning on worldwide issues such as climate change, deforestation, overfishing, game hunting, genetic engineering, etc. It uses direct action, rallies, and research in its campaigns. It is the most visible environmental organization in the world. World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) It?s an international non-governmental organization founded on April 29, 1961. It works towards biodiversity conservation and reducing the carbon footprint. It is the world's largest conservation organization working in more than 100 Nations. The group's mission is: "To stop the degradation of the planet?s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature." It also addresses issues of endangered species and climate change. Its slogan is ? For a living planet? 350.org It?s an international environmental organization encouraging citizens to do their part for the environment. It runs with the belief that publicizing the alarmingly increasing CO2 levels will pressurize world leaders to address the issue of climate change. It was founded by author Bill McKibben and a group of students from Middlebury College. Its goal is to raise awareness about human-actions culminating to rapid climate change and to cut CO2 emissions to slow down global warming. It derives its name from the fact that 350 parts-per-million of CO2 in the atmosphere is a global max safe limit to prevent climate change. Green Globe I also do have my own regional environmental organization Green Globe, through which I have been organizing numerous events including tree plantations, clean up campaigns, awareness campaigns etc. We presently have more than 300 active members and have positively impacted the community through our campaigns.
