Food wastage survey

Attention please! Do not waste food

Food has been one of the most important means of sustenance for human beings but since the past decade food wastage has been an ever-growing threat to our environment.

Every year, around four billion tonnes of food are produced, and around two billion is wasted. We go to places, such as conferences, weddings and other events, where a lot of food is not being used, but we never think about the slums where even an expired piece of bread is gold.

Food wastage is a major issue in the UAE and waste can become a huge challenge if not tackled. It is estimated that nearly 3.27 million tonnes of food, worth more than AED 13 billion, produced and imported in the UAE is wasted every year. Wasting food is wasting a huge amount of energy. Approximately10 percent of energy goes into growing, processing, packaging, and shipping food. And a good chunk of that energy goes into food that gets thrown out somewhere along the way.

Even modest reduction in food waste will make a big contribution towards energy conservation efforts. (sciencenetlinks.com)

So, to do my bit towards saving the environment from food wastage, I along with my We Care members conducted a survey to know the measure of awareness amongst people.

On a pleasant Friday afternoon at around 1 pm my group members and I set out to the nearest mall to our house and spread our members around the food court this made the work faster and easier. We made a food wastage poster which had facts and magazine cut out pictures in it. We also made badges out of recycled paper which said ?I do not waste food?.

All the members wore this badge and we also gave out these to the people who completed the survey as it would give them a motive not to waste food. Along with the badge we gave them Tunza Eco-Generation pens as a token of appreciation. We received a substantial response from everybody and they were very much involved in filling up the survey and knowing about the threats of food wastage. People admired us for taking action against this pernicious threat.
