CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE ROLE OF YOUTH IN MITIGATING ITS EFFECT

by | 19-01-2016 02:59

Alagbaka extension II estate is one of the subsidiaries of the Alagbaka residential estate in  the city of Akure, which is the capital of Ondo state in Nigeria. Every year, the youths gather to have a nice time with talks and seminars about current and vital issues for personal growth and development.

The 2016 edition was  organised by the executives  in a grand style. As part of the activities for the day, I was invited as a speaker to talk on the current trends of climate change and the role of youth in mitigating the effect.

For about fifteen minutes I gave a short illustration on how the whole climate change issue started with the evolution of the industrial age and the major causes which include the emission of greenhouse gases, indiscriminate felling of trees and absolute reliance on fossil fuel as a means of energy.

Furthermore, I further explained the possible ways by which we can ensure the safety of mother earth within our locality. One of the ways suggested is to join youth forums around the world with similar goals on social media like Tunza Eco-generation, blogs and and other related websites. This will enable the youths to share and exchange ideas that can be adapted into our immediate environment when it comes to fighting climate change.

The youths were also  encouraged to support planting of flowers and orchard trees  as against the cemented-floors which is commonly used by our parents in our various residences. Tree planting was also one of the major activities posed to fighting the current menace in our society.

The event was wrapped up by a question and answer session with many participants showing deep interest in being a part of the Tunza Eco-generation team.
