lets think a new way to celebrate !

by Prakriti Dhakal | 12-01-2016 23:27

Maghe Sankranti is the first day of month of Magh of Bikram Sambat. Magh is tenth month in the year. Sankranti is the Sanskrit word in Eastern Astrology which refers to the transmigration of the Sun from one Rashi (sign of the zodiac) to another. In very simple word sangranti is the first day of Nepali calendar. Then obviously, there are 12 such sankrantis in a year. Makar Sankranti is the transition of the Sun from Dhanu rashi (Sagittarius) to Makara rashi (Capricorn).
and the day to celebrate it is just a few days to go , let's why not celebrate it with a new concept ?

As we use to take holly bath known as Makar Snan in Holly Rivers.  The bath is made generally in tribunals (Triveni - the place where three rivers meet).  Shankhamol, the bank of Bagmati river in Patan, Dolalghat, Baraha Kshetra, Ridi, The Sachi Tirtha at Trivenighat (Panauti) and other rivers  .

Beside we Nepalese and Indians ,might be it is new festival to others ,  so i write little about it . I too enjoy a lot in this festival but as  i got the news about it , " the water quality of River Ganga during mass bathing in Haridwar during Maha Kumbha of 2010 in terms of microbiological and molecular analysis. The sample was collected from River Ganga during Makar Sankranti to Shakh Poornima and assessed for fecal indicator bacteria Escherichia colt along with Standard Plate Count (SPC) to determine total bacterial load in the river. Of all the nine days of sample collection (mass bathing days) results on the main royal bath (Baisakhi) displayed maximum SPC (log 6.79 cfu ml(-1)) and most probable number (210 and 150 MPN 100 ml(-1) for total and fecal coli form, respectively). The water was extremely contaminated and not suitable for drinking on Somvati Amavasya, Maghi Poornima, Maha Shivratri and Baisakhi. The results clearly indicated that the mass bathing coupled with ritual activities performed by bathers was most probable cause of increased values of different parameters. The polymerase chain reaction analysis targeting malate dehydrogenase (mdh) gene proved to be more rapid and sensitive than classical culture technique .

And now , it is 2016 ,  6 years later from the above data, again a huge mass of bacteria is going to take new life in the holy rivers and we the fools think that out soul get pure through polluting the river , why can't we look the other way to celebrate it ?
Would you please suggest me a new idea to save our holy rivers ?
Sorry to say but there is bathroom to bath then why to pollute the environment in the name of festival ? We are youth for environment and environment for youth , lets start from our self we Nepalese and Indians , lets celebrate the up coming festival in a new way !
