Seychelles archipelago contains both granitic and coralline islands. They experience two types of season 1. South East Monsoon (Dry Season) - May to October 2. North West Monsoon (Wet Season) - November to April During the dry season, Seychelles experiences water shortages thus Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) are forced to ration the supply of water to households and firms. It is believed by the general officer of PUC, that the amount of water that the rainy season brings every year should be sufficient to meet the population demand which is 40,000 cubic metre per day - however, only an average of 2,300 millimetres of rain is measured every year during the dry season. Minister of Environment, Mr. Dogley, went to Sweden, to see the possibility of getting assistance from the Swedish government to drill for underground water in the Seychelles archipelago, since they have an agency with expertise in ground water and their granitic nature is similar to that of the Seychelles. The process was explained as follows by Mr. Dogley when it rains, the water accumulate in the cracks within the rocks, the accumulation of water will be like a dam only underground deep into the oil, during the dry season. May when its get really dry there will be an additional source of water instead of using 100% desalination. To compensate for the dry season, a total of 1 million cubic metres of desalinated water is produced from four desalination plants every year, to be consumed by the population as potable water. |
