Water Scarcity Threat in Lagos

by | 28-11-2015 07:14

Water scarcity is a situation rarely associated with Nigeria. With lots of coastlines and adequate rainfall, we are not among countries that bother much about the crystal clear liquid.
However, Lagos State- Nigeria's commercial capital- is currently facing water scarcity. With an active population of over 16 million people and the long hours of strenuous work in the city, water scarcity is among the last things Lagosians would want to put up with.

After staying silent on the issue, the huge concern raised by Lagos residents forced the Lagos State government led by the governor, Mr Akinwumi Ambode, to wade into the situation by first apologizing to residents and then working to resolve the issue.

Vanguard newspaper, one of Nigeria's national dailies gathered thus  "the non-availability of chemicals at the water works crippled the water production in Iju and Adiyan water works that produce 105 million gallons of water daily. Sources, however, said that these facilities are not functioning at full capacity".

I am happy to report that the state government has ordered the purchase of the chemicals and the distribution of same to the relevant water bodies commenced last week Friday. Water supply across the hub of Nigeria's commercial capital is expected to improve very soon and I can't wait to see that happen as water is a natural human right.
