ENJOY BUT CLEAN UP THE TRASH

ENJOY BUT CLEAN UP THE TRASH

On my way back from a class, I was glad to see people in large numbers bursting firecrackers and celebrating Diwali with fervor and gaiety, in a very frolicsome mood. However, soon, I began noticing that their careless and nonchalant action was causing a great deal of damage to the environment.

I was aghast to see how the local residents were lighting up their pencils, bombs and sparklers without a thought given to the local environment.  Firecrackers of all kinds produced smoke and  fumes that rose into the cool night air and deafening noise  leading to air and sound pollution simultaneously. I also noticed, people throwing the trash of  burst crackers openly in the sand field.

Next Day, I saw municipality workers cleaning the whole ground right from early morning to give our city a usual clean look. With the onset of evening again revellers gathered near the field and burst crackers and again threw the trash on the field without giving it a thought of throwing it in a trash box. Next morning it was holiday for the workers so nobody came to clean the field. There is a saying ? Practice before you preach? . With this thought in my mind I took charge. I collected few of my WE CARE environment group members and took gloves and eco-friendly polythene bags. I went to the field and started collecting the Diwali trash. To my utter surprise we collected so much that we ran short of Garbage bags. It was bright sunny day but we continued picking up the trash till the time the field was not looking clean.  Even though we were tired because of heat but we were immensely satisfied that our small effort had made some contributions towards making our environment and city clean.

Diwali is a festival of light and cleanliness.  We clean our house but we dirty our surroundings.  We should enjoy our festival with fervor but we should also take the responsibility to clean the place instead of leaving it for the workers to clean it.

Dubai municipality workers do not leave any stone unturned to keep our city clean .

Dubai government is liberal enough to allow us to enjoy our diverse festivals, but we should not take undue advantage. We should enjoy but at the same time one should be responsible enough not to litter around.
