![]() ![]() A practice carried on for generations and generations cannot be stopped at once. It takes time and other factors to motivate people to give up a practice that they have been doing for a long, long time. Lighting of crackers has been a tradition in India. Every year on the festival of Diwali, people burst various kinds of crackers, some causing less pollution, others covering up the whole sky with a layer of smoke. According to a report by a national daily, the sale of crackers has reduced by 40% this year, which is a good sign. It shows that people, although a bit late, are becoming aware of the harmful effects of crackers. These crackers not only make us ill, but are the reason for accidental fires in many places. Every year there are reports of fire in some cracker shop or small hamlets in which some stray spark goes flying. If we look at it, pollution is just one problem associated with bursting of crackers. The harm is done on a very large scale and this damage cannot be undone. We need to be more sensitive about these environmental issues. |
