Various efforts to mitigate climate change - By UAE

by | 21-10-2015 15:26

I believe that Nature can offset the climate change effects is a better & effective manner. Only if we do it wisely. This will sustain the effects for a longer period.

For example, we all know that vegetation or Trees & plants absorb the carbon dioxide & emit oxygen in the atmosphere. That's why we all advocate planting of more & more trees for our better health. To further substantiate this theory the National Blue Carbon Project has published a report after One & Half year of research that Mangrove as been identified as the plant that offsets most carbon in the Arabian Peninsula. Mangrove has the natural capacity to stock carbon.

Per hectare of a Mangrove swamp helps to offset 600,000 KG of Carbon. A car normally emits 5,000 KG of carbon in a year. It means that it will offset the carbon emitted by 120 cars for a year. The UAE is habited by 3,000 hectares of Mangrove Swamps, this has potentially the capability to offset the carbon of thousands of cars.

If you are cutting down mangrove trees the carbon sink stocked by the tree will be released in the atmosphere. This will destroy the environment as well as cause the release of harmful carbon dioxide gases as well. So, The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi and the Ministry of Environment and Water are both looking to increase the amount of mangroves plantations in the UAE. In northern emirates the plantation is much larger. This project has opened new avenues.

Increasing the naturally sustainable Mangrove plantations in UAE is much more easier than developing other alien species. Mangrove can easily sustain in harsh weather of the UAE.

This will help mitigate the climate change in UAE & the Middle east in an effective manner.
