HEATWAVE TO HIT SOUTHERN AFRICA

by | 11-10-2015 01:43

Browsing my way through one of my social media platforms earlier this week, I came across a post in one of the groups that makes me pause for a bit and read. It is a message alerting of a high rise in temperatures across parts of Southern Africa including Zimbabwe and how this threatens to cause harm to human lives. I immediately dismiss this as being a prank and not likely to happen in the near future. But after seeing this same warning message in other media and receiving some personal inboxes from friends, I begin to worry more and indulge in my own research.

A view of one credible international news broadcaster, reading the similar alert in a local newspaper and I am finally convinced. Couold this be what climate-change scholars sometimes warn about as symptoms of the decaying planet? Or is it merely just a natural occurrence which is not related to climate change?

The Meteorological Services Department in Zimbabwe also issued a heat wave warning saying different parts of the country will experience high temperatures of between 35 and 45 degrees celsius starting today until next weekend.

Daytime temperatures over the country are expected to range between 35 degrees Celsius and 43 degrees celsius peaking to as high as 45 degrees celsius in low lying areas.
Low lying areas such as Binga, Beitbridge, Kariba and Chiredzi are said to be the most likely affected.

The temperatures are expected to reduce slightly in the Lowveld, by 2 degrees celsius to 3 degree celsius, on Monday but thereafter should increase again from Friday next week.
