A model on - Water distillation and purification by solar energy

by | 27-09-2015 02:50

We attended a city level science exhibition from the 9 to 11 Sep?15 at Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh  India .We came across many interesting models  related to  energy saving, water conservation and different environmental issues. This exhibition was organized in a government school where a total of 875  models were displayed .The ideas which were displayed by the students, if practically implemented is really beneficial for our society. We are planning to share a few of them with all of you so that these models can be upgraded with the help of your  suggestions .

Here ,I am sharing the details of a model on ?Water distillation and purification by solar energy? .            Miss Somya Patel  a student of class 10 who is presently studying in Shri Gurunanak Girls Higher Senior School Jabalpur had presented how dirty water can be  purified with help of solar energy , mainly in the remote area / villages where electricity  is not available .

Somya had  developed the model with the help of small pieces of plane mirrors around 8 nos.  ( collected from a broken big mirror ) . She had fitted the mirrors  on a curve surface to concentrate  the sun rays  by reflection at a  particular area where a conical flask filled with dirty was placed. `The accumulated solar heat was used to heat the water and evaporate it. The evaporated water droplets was collected and condensed to get distilled water. Further the water was chemically treated to get  clean water. The model was  explained by her very well and a very effective solution to get pure drinking water was shown  .The 10th grader said that her model is helpful especially in the villages .

Related photographs are shared here.    There are many such solutions and our friends can share them for  our knowledge  .

There are four possible ways of purifying water for drinking purpose:

1. Distillation

2. Filtration

3. Chemical Treatment

4. Irradiative Treatment

Considering the areas where the technology is intended to be used we can rule out few of the above mentioned methods based on the unavailability of materials or costs

So the heat  from sun can be used in the villages where pollution level is not very high and minor investment can resolve the issue.  Request to our friends to share their solution for  water filtration.
