![]() On the 21st of September, I along with a few members of my environmental youth group We Care organized an awareness initiative on the World Car-Free Day in our building. We organized it under the theme ?Stop the POLLUTION, Pick a SOLUTION?. We realized that if we have to make a World Car-Free Day a massive success, we had to spread awareness at the grassroot level—i.e by starting with our neighborhood . Hence, we went from flat to flat in the building disseminating awareness on the World Car-Free Day, on the ever-increasing and alarming levels of pollution in the atmosphere, its after-effects and how each and every individual?s actions can bring about a sea-change in our global environmental efforts. Once we had enlightened neighbours with this knowledge we requested them to pledge-?On Tuesday,September 22 2015, I will eliminate or reduce my driving. This includes driving to work, school or to run errands". I began with my father and then with all flats on my floor of the building. Within 2 hours time, we had succeeded in making the residents of almost all flats aware about the important day and were also successful in making all of them pledge for Mother Earth and sign. We advised those who had to travel to nearby places to walk/cycle and those who had to commute over long distances (for important conferences and meetings, etc.) to use the metro, bus and other forms of public transportation. In this manner, we thus ensured that World Car-Free Day 2015 would be a time for individuals and communities to come together to explore the benefits of walking, biking (cycling) and using public transportation services in the city to commute to their respective destinations.
