[March Free Report] Micronesia

by Baekjin Kim | 18-03-2023 05:28

Micronesia is a beautiful archipelagic state located in the continent of Oceania. Recently, climate change and rising sea levels are a common issue that has been spotted along with the nearby states. According to the World Bank Group, The Federated States of Micronesia experienced warming of around 0.7 degrees celsius between 1980 and 2017. It is most likely to be around 3.0 degrees celsius of warming by the end of the century.

Additionally, climate changes are happening simultaneously, and there are potential threats of natural disasters which include extreme heat, intensified cyclones, and extreme rainfall. According to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Micronesians mostly rely on farming and fishing, which can directly affect their economic system. Furthermore, low-lying areas can be affected by the change in sea levels, which increases the risks of saline intrusion, tsunami and cyclone-induced storm surges, wave-driven flooding, and coastal erosion. These islands are in severe danger and could disappear in a second without any notice.

Some simple solutions that can be helpful are minimizing the usage of greenhouse gases and reducing the usage of vehicles. Recently, I have started to walk to school, where I feel more healthier and beneficial not only for myself but to the ecosystems as well. Moreover, in our school American School Dhahran, students ride school buses due to the fact that they live in a far area, but the students who live close by try their best to not ride any vehicles but to ride an eco-friendly bicycle to protect the earth.
