Sustainable management and recycling of greasy waste

by Arushi Madan | 21-09-2015 03:01

Oils and fats leaking into the sewerage systems can block the drainage pipes which can cause environmental disasters and even affect public health. Thus efforts have been made by Dubai municipality to preserve the public health.

Dubai Municipality made a sustainable plan for the collection, transfer and recycling of waste oils and other lubricants.

Dubai Municipality had allowed 28 accredited companies for transporting the oil and grease waste collected in the traps installed at restaurants and hotels to the oil recycling plant. These services are offered at a reasonable price affordable by food facilities in order to ensure environmental sustainability for those living in the emirate of Dubai.

The Dubai Municipality has collected a staggering 50million gallons of oil, grease, fat and waste food from the emirate's sewage network and got them recycled into raw materials for soap, wax/ candles, cosmetics ,bio-fuels etc. This is called composting of greasy waste and involves anaerobic digestion.

Under the local order and the administrative ordinance,  all establishments which deal in oils and grease were bound to fix gully traps as part of the sewage network on the basis of the fact that oils and greases often float on the surface of the gully trap. Hence it is easy to collect these oils and separate them away from the sewage network section to ensure the flow of the sewers in the sewage pipeline network, and ensure there are no oils that hinder the move of the sewers. The sewers are gushed out through the sewage stations .

The Envirol Oil Treatment Plant recycles oils and grease and help maintain a safe and sustainable environment for the residents in the emirate.
