The 'Others'by | 01-09-2015 17:24 |

Dear friends, As part of my activism, I used to organize activities in support of pro-climate policies. I have met many people, although this time, I had the most surprising incident of all. Once, however, I saw a man who has littered. Instead of calling the cops (Singapore can be really strict in its laws on littering), I decided to convince him to pick up the litter. "Sir, how have you been?" I utter gently. He spurned around, shocked, and said hi. "Sir, this is a public place, and thus, you should not have littered. Maybe you should pick that up?" What surprised me later was his reply. "Dude, I don't have hands, man....I gotta be kidding myself if I want to keep that piece of junk on ma hands!" This really gave me an insight into human behaviour and the 'others' who have been doing dirty work and littering. It is not about the harshness of policies or the penalty of the laws that deter littering. True, penalties do work in the short term, but what if the penalties are gone? People will only go back to their old ways! Thus, think of it this way: it is about alleviating the plight of humans who are holding the litter! And the only way to do that is to be creative and innovative. Start brainstorming solutions to tradition human problems instead of relying on governments to stop climate change. We can all make a change and it is time we start bangingbrains! :)
