Clean and Green Energy in Bali

by | 23-08-2015 13:47

Bali has a goal to be a clean and green island. This goal should become an integral development strategy on its tourism industry. Thus, Bali become a pilot project region for clean energy in Indonesia, by maximizing solar and gas utilization on power plants.

Solar Power Plant

With limited reserves of fossil energy, the optimization of the use of renewable energy is a must. Indonesia as a tropical country which solar energy is abundant has a great opportunity to utilize solar power which is pollution free. As it is known, Bali Province owns several Solar Power Plants located in Karangasem Regency with the capacity of 1 MWp On-Grid, in Bangli with 1 MWp On-Grid, as well as 6 units of 15 kWp Solar Power Plant Off-Grid. This is the biggest On-Grid solar power plant in Indonesia.

Bamboo Biomass Power Plant

In addition, a Biomass Power Plant with a capacity of 400 kW with bamboo waste as raw materials is being constructed in Bangli regency. Bangli is the center of bamboo plantation in Bali and therefore produce abundant bamboo waste from their handicraft industry. This waste is usually burned, thrown to the river or piling up all over the people's backyard and forest floor. This is a good opportunity to explore a possibility to generate electricity from bamboo waste.

Gasification process converts this bamboo waste into synthesis gases what would otherwise be a waste product into high value products. With its cleaning capability, gasification uses a totally different concept than incinerator as it produces much less harmful emission and therefore it is suitable to be deployed near residential areas which will readily become the electricity consumers it produces.

This shows how people are able to create energy from local source without sacrificing its beautiful nature and helping the whole region becomes clean and green.
