South Korea's national flower Mugunghwa

by | 18-08-2015 10:40

Hello ladies and gentleman. Today, this ambassador would like to introduce our country, South Korea's national flower.

On August 15th, South Korea marked its 70th Liberation Day. We became independent on August 15th, 1945. Since then, South Korea has showed the miracle of Han River by reaching high economic development. Today, as a patriot, I will discuss our national flower as I stated above.

So, the national flower of South Korea is 'Mugunghwa', also called as 'Hibiscus syriacus L.'. According to the 'San Hae Kyeong' which was written in China in B.C. 8-3 century, it says that Mugunghwa was widespread in Korea.

'Mugunghwa' stands for devotion. It shows the persistent mind of Korean who were not defeated by foreign invasions. Since the meaning of 'Mugunhwa' well reflects the sentiment of Korean, I believe that it suits as our national flower.

To briefly explain the features of Mugunghwa, the average height is 2-4 meters and the diameter of the flower is 7.5cm. The color of the flower is diverse, including white, light pink, pink, red, purple and so on. Unlike many other plants that blooms in spring, Mugunghwa blooms in summer, overcoming the heat for over a hundred years. This fact makes Mugunghwa more attractive.:)

So the good news is that 'Korea Forest Research Institute' published an illustrated book about Mugunghwa. It is opened to everyone which makes it easier for use to see and learn more about our national flower. The book is based on the fifty year research and investigation performed by 'Korea Forest Research Institute'.

Above 220 species of Mugunghwa, the book contains 153 species. The book explains the feature, shape of flower, the ratio of width and length, blossom information, duration and so on.

I insist that we should continuously study Mugunghwa and learn more about it. Moreover, there are many organisms that are becoming extinct. To prevent Mugunghwa from extinction and help them to prosper, we need to put more effort.

Thanks for reading.
