How lucky would anyone feel when they are invited as a guest teacher in the same school where they were once a student and more than that get a chance to organize an event as well? Yeah dear eco- warriors, I fortunately I was one of the lucky ones to have these experience. In my previous article I already shared my experience as a guest teacher of Environment, Health and Population Studies at Grandee English Boarding School, Chitwan Nepal. I am so glad to share that I had an opportunity to organize Eco- Speech Cum Quiz Contest as a Regional Ambassador for Tunza Eco- Generation. At last day of my teaching I proposed about the contest with Principal Mrs. Mina Gurung and she was more than happy to hear my proposal. Principal Ma'am replied "It would be an entirely new experience for students as well as us for having ECA dedicated to environment, organized on behalf of global organization". The date for the contest was fixed for 3rd July, 2015. It was Friday and I saw students dressed in uniform accordingly to their ECA team. At around 2pm the contest gained momentum when 20 students were selected among 350+ students from Grade 6 to 10 to participate in the contest. It was amazing to see the students so eagerly waiting for their turn and selection. 3 Judges were selected who were teachers of Environmental Studies, Literature and English studies and the topic of Speech competition was "My Environment, My Responsibility". First of all I introduced Tunza Eco- Generation to them (some were already familiar as I introduced while I was taking classes as a guest teacher), my role as an ambassador and the purpose of eco- speech cum quiz contest. Then after without making any late the speech contest rolled on. Wow! The confidence level students had been surprising. Happiness doubled to see girls' participants equaling to boys. Participants presented their robust ideas in an elegant way. Students' defined environment according to their understanding reflected the importance of environment and alarmed how people are encroaching natural resources. Participants even highlighted the issues of anthropogenic climate change and its impacts on agriculture and changing lifestyle. They mainly focused on avoiding usage of non- degradable especially plastics and composting degradable at area of production like house, school, office etc. As a student they realized that they can be a change maker in their family and community, spreading the knowledge about environmental responsibility and being a role model. Contestants requested audience to follow healthy lifestyle and increase the life of products degradable or non- degradable by utilizing it till it works. Saving water and energy, using energy efficient bulbs at home was also a responsibility, they pointed out. Overall, students' uncovered diverse environmental issues and analyzed each and every bit of their responsibility. It is really admirable that such little minds were that matured to have such a broad vision and figuring out wide range of viable solutions to persisting environmental issues. To add the charm, in between the speeches, I had some eco- quiz for the audience and they were able to answer many of the questions. Due to delayed uncertain postal service in my country I couldn't hand the souvenirs to winners on the same date but I promised them to visit with souvenirs soon. As students were having exams followed by a short vacation, I was able to re- visit the school on 7th August only (It is also the reason why I am posting this report such late .I apologize for this delay). While I reached the school at 10am, students were having morning assembly. They recognized me well in yellow T- shirt of Eco- generation and their curiosity was expressed through eyes. I asked Principal Mrs. Mina Gurung and the judges to hand over souvenirs to the winners and all of the participants. To express my gratitude I gifted a souvenir to Principal Ma'am too. Students applauded loud with cheerful faces when Principal Ma'am shared how glad the entire school team feels to organize this contest in their school via their ex- student as a regional ambassador at Eco- Generation. She thanked Tunza Eco- Generation for the promotional goods and making me a part of this inspiring platform. Overall, it was a very proud moment for me to organize a successful event at Grandee English Boarding School and receive commendable feedback from teachers and students. I am hopeful that students enjoyed learning and their concern towards environment is enhanced through this event. Last but above all, I would like to Thank you Tunza Eco- Generation for making me an integral part of this global family, inspiring me to inspire others for environmental conservation and also for sending those promotional goods. |
