The global quest for sustainable energy future through the exploration of strategies on achieving high energy efficiency and sustainability performance in buildings has intensified due to the threat posed by climate change. Building sector consume a significantly high percentage of the total Nigerian energy hence, there is no doubt that reducing energy consumption in this sector is a potential solution to energy insecurity which has stymied the socioeconomic activities in the country. A Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) is a building which, on annual basis, use no more energy than is provided by on-site renewable energy sources- the operational energy needs of the building has been greatly reduced such that the balance of energy needs can be generated on-site using renewable energy technologies. At the heart of the NZEB concept is the idea that buildings can meet all their energy requirements from low-cost, locally available, nonpolluting renewable sources hence the initiative is driven by environmental responsibility, occupants wellbeing, long-term cost and resource saving and the desire to showcase how today's technology can be wonderfully combined with the right ideas and innovation.
This concept should be encouraged to reduce emission of greenhouse gases, to reduce the load on electrical system, to optimal optimally utilised the abundant renewable energy sources and to boost the economy of developing countries.
