|BRAZIL| My "Penguin conservation project" Experience!

by Luiz Bispo | 01-08-2015 13:24

If somebody asks me my favorite animals, I can say that "Penguin" is one of them. That is because I love their way to raise their offspring and cooperate each other to survive in cold weather. Fortunately, I had chance to join the Penguin conservation project in Montague Island. While staying 5 days there, I can contribute to the long term protection of Little Penguin colony.

This island has been listed as the Conservation of Nature, which is considered as world leader in environmental management by the International Union. The aim for this project is to recover the natural environment and protect and breed the penguins. I even had chance to stay overnight in the restored the lighthouse keeper's residence on this island. We created the penguin's pathways to enable penguins to access their nesting sites. Some rangers have erected the penguin's houses to prevent them from being tangled with undergrowth.

In Brazil, there was a huge accident of which over 200 penguins were dead with oil slick in 2008. The dead penguins were found on the beaches of the island city of Florianopolis which is a popular Brazilian resort. Police presumed that the oil probably leaked from a large ship. It is true that many penguins have been threatening from oil intoxication.

In 2012, over than 700Magellean penguins have washed up dead on the beach of south Brazil. Interestingly the researchers presumed that those penguins died of nature based on no injuries of their body. This kind's of death until now have remained unsolved mystery, however, biologist believed annual die-off of animals were related to illegal ship oil across the Atlantic

Penguins also shown up along beaches of Rio de Janeiro. 4o penguins of them were rescued in 2012. It is the fact that all kinds of penguins in the world have disappeared dramatically for last few decade because of hunting for oil, taking their eggs and natural environment. Even though I have had a short experience of Penguin conservation, however, it was enough to be aware of importance of that project. I hope that there are more relevant projects created for them in near future.
