Hokkaido University : an Eco Campus

by | 28-07-2015 15:32

School is not just about place to studying in a class, moreover, comprehensive education should be existed in the school atmosphere, from the moral education, environmental education, and so on. So, many education institutions try to make their atmosphere as good as possible for those comprehension education, one of them is my University.

Currently, I am studying environmental science in Hokkaido University, Japan. Fortunately, I am in the right place, in the university that has Eco Campus Project, a project to make Campus more eco friendly. Some of university efforts to become Eco campus are identifying plants that could be found inside campus and establishing campus gardens and parks. I like the way of Hokkaido University to integrate between campus life with environmental education through facilities in campus.

Identifying campus plants not only for just to know, but, by knowing plants around us, we sill be able to protect them. How can we protect them if we event do not know them? There are 704 plants species recorded in Hokkaido university. Moreover, there are many university facilities which is using green technology such as solar panel in almost all building, using automatic led light, automatic tap water, and nanoparticle covered window, etc. Of course, all of those facilities can reduce conventional energy consumption and other resources consumption.

Then, in Hokkaido University botanical garden, there are many plant collections. In 1877, Hokkaido university founder recommended the Hokkaido Colonial Department to established botanical garden and finally in 1886, the botanical garden was opened. When I visited this botanical garden, I not only enjoyed the freshness of the nature, but also learned about nature itself. One of my favorite sites in this botanical garden is Museum and National Treasures, because there are many animal specimens that made me feel that I need to care on wildlife. Many of those animal specimens are already extinct in the wild. Hope the other faunas could survive ever after.

Moreover, I hope many other education institutions not only concern on education development, but also strengthen environmental education soul because as I said, School is not just about place to studying in a class.
