The island of Tilos, one of the most beautiful places I have been on vacation to, is the first island which aims to become energy autonomous in the near future, through an Hybridic system of production and storing of energy, exclusively by Renewable Energy Sources (RES)
Tilos has an area of 61.5 Km2 and 780 permanent residents. During the summer, because of tourism, the population increases to several thousand people.
On the island, a photovoltaic power park (0.7 MW) and a wind turbine (0.3MW) will be installed. Simultaneously, a battery system will be constructed to smooth the differences between the production and consumption of energy.
At the same time, in every home a clever energy meter is installed to inform easily the residents about their rate of consumption and thus implement corrective actions to reduce it and simultaneously make savings in their budget.
Today the island is supplied with electricity by an underwater cable, coming from Kos Island, which often causes blackouts and other problems.
The TILOS program, as this program is named, has been included in Horizon 2020, the largest funding program for EU innovation, taking in the phase of evaluating the highest rating among 80 competing projects.
Companies and institutes in seven European countries participate in the program. In Greece, these companies and institutes include the Hellenic Public Power Corporation, the greek electricity company of photovoltaic panels ?Einice? and also WWF Greece.
I believe that such innovative programs open the door to more widespread use of renewable energy and increasing the scale of projects can demonstrate that energy independence from non renewable energy sources, can actually become an everyday reality .
In one of my previous articles on April 14, 201, I reported on a study for WWF Greece for the possibility of self-sufficiency of the country without the use of highly polluting lignite.
Today, in Greece, 40% of the energy is sadly provided by coal. However, 25% of the energy is provided by RES.
