Ghana is confronted with serious and complex environmental challenges. This includes illegal mining, logging, deforestation, noise, water and air pollution. I would like to hit up on open defecation. Open defecation has been thing of the past but in Ghana is a thing of the present.

I was devastated upon seeing all this mess makers at the river side and seashores. I ask myself can this be curb. I decided to investigate by asking people why all these are happening. Through my interrogation, I was fortunate to get in touch with an environmental scientist, whose work is to see to it that the environment is sustain.

So we started the conversation by knowing each other and I told him about what I am doing as a change maker. He was impress to see how vibrant and curious I was to know more about Ghana?s situation. He congratulated me on what I am doing. Now this is the time for the seriousness. I confronted him about the open defecation in and outside water bodies. Guess what this brought about an argument. Whether it can be stopped completely or minimize.

He started by saying this mess have been created several years back and solving this in 4 to 5yrs is a terrible lie. Oops! Terrible. So here is his point. The major occupation of Ghanaian?s living at the coast is fishing. Yes I agreed with that. He then ask me where are the toilet for the fishermen to defecate in.

For instance, Kofi a fisherman went to fish and he wants to defecate and his house is a mile from the shore. There is no toilet around for him to expel the waste out. He will create the mess for sure there. Even if there is a toilet to carter too, it will still not solve the mess why?
These fishermen don?t have a permanent place for their harvest. And they can?t walk that far to defecate. To be precise they don?t have the tools for their fishing hence letting them create the mess.

The government has contracts a loan to fight open defecation in the country. But I know it will not be all that strong to curb this problem. It would only be politicize. Click to read more about the contract
