![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This year, as I turned 18 years old, I spent my birthday at a special forum held in Malacanang Palace, which is the official residence and office of the President of the Philippines. Why did I get the chance to spend my birthday at Malacanang? It is because the office of the Climate Change Commission happens to be in the Malacanang Compound and I got invited to a forum there.
The forum was aimed at bringing together youth movements for climate action to support the National Youth Commission?s (NYC) ONE MILLION FILIPINO VOICES ON CLIMATE CHANGE CAMPAIGN. The NYC is a government agency founded in 1995, which addresses issues affecting the Filipino youth. This year, NYC launched the One Million Voices on Climate Change as a response to the call of the Philippine and French governments in March 2015 to focus on the prevention of the global mean temperature rising up by another 2? as that is the tipping point of the world?s climate.
The meeting oriented the participants on the campaign and strategy. They asked our different organizations for help in gathering the one million expressions of support from youth all over the Philippines. These expressions of support will be presented to President Francois Hollande of France, who is also the President of the 21st Conference of Parties to be held in Paris in December 2015.
Before we get expressions of support and signatures, we will conduct environmental awareness camps. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will support us so that we can conduct the camps in our own towns and cities. I am even thinking of doing this by region if we can. I am thinking of topics and who I can invite to help facilitate the camps. I have spoken to our Department of Education here in our City and they are willing to help organize the camps. We even have our first batch of participants and they are the YES-O officers. YES-O stands for Youth for Environment in School Organization, which is the environment club mandated in all elementary and high schools in the country.
I just received the project proposal template and we will attend a training workshop this Friday. Now the campaign to gather One Million Expressions of Support has begun! |
