![]() I was reading the newspaper (Philippine Daily Inquirer) when I saw the picture of our Philippine Senator Loren Legarda. This got me interested because she is known to be a Champion of the Environment. When I did some research, I found out that she is the United Nations Champion for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation for Asia-Pacific.
As I read the article I found out that what she is doing in Paris is related to what I am about to do now with the Climate Change Commission. Senator Legarda attended the Summit of Consciences for the Climate which was organized by Nicolas Hulot, Special Envoy of the French President for the Protection of the Planet. At the Summit, Senator Legarda and the other country delegates signed a CALL TO THE CONSCIENCE FOR THE CLIMATE, which will be presented to the heads of delegations at the 21st Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) in Paris this December 2015.
The initiative I am working on now with the Climate Change Commission is called ONE MILLION FILIPINO VOICES ON CLIMATE CHANGE CAMPAIGN. The one million signatures and expressions of support for the Philippine statement will also be presented to the French President, Francois Hollande, who is hosting the COP21.
Senator Loren Legarda delivered a speech at the Summit where she said that the Philippines is ready to lead the fight to combat climate change. She reminded the participants at the Plenary Session on ?Inspiring the World to Care – Igniting the Will to Act for the Climate? that the Philippines emits very little carbon in the world compared to others countries, yet it is one of the most vulnerable nations as seen in the effects of Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.
Senator Legarda said that she will launch a Summit of Consciences for the Climate in the Philippines by reaching the cities, towns, villages and state colleges and universities in the Philippines. Since this pledge sounds so much like what we will be doing for the One Million Filipino Voices for Climate Change, I wish our leaders will do this together and come up with a stronger, united voice for the Philippines. I think, since both are awareness campaigns for the effects of Climate Change, we should work together. |
