ESS IN VIETNAM

The development of energy storage systems in Vietnam when renewable power source is an inevitable trend to ensure a stable and safe power system. However, the increase in the proportion of energy renewable power in the power source structure has caused many problems for stable operation of the electricity system. Stemming from this fact, many countries around the world have combined the process of increasing the proportion of renewable energy sources with the investment in the Energy Storage System (ESS). The energy storage system will contribute to reducing the maximum capacity during the rush hour of the electrical system, reducing the situation of the grid overloaded, or reducing the demand for electricity investment and the grid infrastructure to meet the demand for a few peak hours, thereby improving the economic efficiency of the electrical system.

According to international energy experts, when the level of energy penetration into the electricity system reaches a minimum of 15% or more in terms of production scale, the ESS investment will make sense.

In Vietnam, the total capacity of renewable energy (including wind, solar) installed as of October 31, 2021 reaches 20,462 MW, equivalent to 27.2% of the whole system capacity. The proportion of capacity has increased rapidly over the past two years thanks to the preferential price policy (FIT) for the development of solar and wind power. Although the capacity from renewable energy accounts for 27%, the contribution of this type of energy is only about 10.9% in the whole system.

A cause of the low power output from this renewable energy is that the wind and sun power plants after being put into operation must face the reduction of generation due to transmission mesh overload. Therefore, the demand for construction investment and putting into operation the energy storage system is urgent from the present time, it is necessary to urgently deploy to ensure the top coverage, as well as prevent the wind power, the electric face. Heaven, helping to operate the system stable and effective.

Strategies to develop energy storage systems in Vietnam:

¡¤       1. Building hydropower plants

¡¤       2. Building energy storage battery system

In order to achieve the goal of reducing carbon net emissions by 2050, the energy policy needs to promote different economic sectors to invest in energy storage systems both large, small, and micro to replace the coal energy platform of Vietnam's electric system today. But the core problem is that the investment mechanism, ESS operate and the electricity purchase price from the system (in the charging mode), as well as the electricity price from ESS.
