![]() Hello Friends, In this article I wanted to talk to all the Eco Generation members about a unique opportunity I have am going to have the pleasure of embarking upon. In less than 4 weeks, I will be going on an arctic expedition which will allow me to travel to one of the most pristine areas of the world. The expedition is called Students on Ice (SOI). SOI is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for environmentally aware youth who have the potential to be the leaders of tomorrow. To date, I have had the fortune of being able to travel to many different and interesting places. However, it is definitely no overstatement to say that this will be one of the most unique and exciting trips I have ever been on. SOI is an expedition which combines scientific and environmental learning with ones sense of leadership, initiative and awareness. However, this two week long expedition to the arctic is something which focussed on developing young leaders who will become inspired and go back to their respective communities and promote environmental awareness. The question that came to my mind as I filled out the application for this program, was how. How does a two week long trip aboard a ship, travelling across Greenland and Northern Canada have the potential to be a perception and life changing experience? I found the answer to this question after reflecting on the matter for a few days. I was able to piece together the different components of this journey: arctic, scientific expedition, learning, and environmental leadership – ultimately realizing that all these components go hand in hand. SOI is a journey that pieces all of these components to create one creatively and mentally stimulating and productive expedition. The arctic is a part of the world which has yet to be reached by the devastating reaches of human civilization. Hence pollution, smog and other urban phenomena are not present in the arctic. However, the arctic is also one of the most affected regions in terms of climate change. Though mankind has not colonized the arctic on a large scale, the effects of human industrialization are perhaps most profound in the arctic. This last pristine sanctuary which is home to many different species – many of which we will be observing during SOI – must now be protected. And what a better way than educating and inspiring youth from around the world. The arctic also holds scientific importance. From the water cycle to ecology – the arctic is key to maintain a global balance. This balance is what ensures the stability for life on earth. I really look forward to learn firsthand about these important topics as well as see and experience stunning natural beauty in what is truly one of the most pristine regions of the world. I plan to dedicate a full set of articles of what I learn and what I saw on this trip upon my return. photo credit: card-arctic.ca |
