Tunza Eco- club, Nepal has began its journey

by | 08-07-2015 13:10

Dear Friends, I had already shared a report with you about the formation of Tunza Eco- Club, Nepal at Janapriya Public School, Chitwan on 5th June, 2015. Today I am much elated to share with you the progress of the Eco- Club.

On 30th June, I visited the school to motivate and encourage club members for action also to propose cleanliness campaign on 4th July. While I reached the school in my cycle at 1.30pm, students were having lunch break.  As soon as I entered a bunch of students greeted and I can hear them whispering about Eco- club. I met the Principal Mr. Bhanu Aryal who is patron for our eco- club. I proposed the cleanliness campaign and to my pleasant surprise I came to know that Eco- club has kick started their action. He informed me that on 12th June (a week after formation of Eco- club) member held cleanliness campaign in their school's surrounding. On 19th June they collected wastes from the local community. Similarly on 26th June, members planted locally available flowers in their school garden and they also installed separate sacs for degradable and non- degradable waste in their school. Then after, I met with the club members. Their happiness to see to me was reflected in their lovely smiles. They showed me the flower garden and sacs they have installed. Also, they have made one report diary for Eco- club to record their event details. After having fruitful discussion and information sharing, I returned back and yeah I was on cloud nine to hear and see the enthusiasm Eco- club members possessed.

On 4th July, I and my cousin sister walked to the school and by the time we reached at 6.25am some members had already arrived. When 20 members and students of Grade nine gathered, I gave instructions and overview of the event. I appreciated their work and expressed my commitment to support them at full extent. Our objective of the event that day was to collect plastic waste along the road of local community nearly 1.5 km in length. I had bought gloves and two sacks for the event. At 6.45am we started from the nearby market and collected every visible plastic wastes along the road. It is sad to see that most of the waste comprised of wrappers of tobacco products and chocolates. We even requested some shops and households to keep dustbin and not to throw plastic recklessly. They promised to keep dustbin on our request. Nearly at 8 am we reached the target point and by then we had collected two sacs nearly full with the wastes. The waste collected was disposed in the big pit with rings installed by the municipality. Wow! Finally the event was accomplished well in the active involvement of members/students. Mr. Aryal appreciated the work and initiatives of Tunza eco- club and expressed his commitment to support in all possible ways.

I can't explain in words how proud I feel to see the interest and dedication of those members, despite the lack of resources they have managed to conduct events themselves. To support their work, disseminate it to a larger mass and inspire other students for environmental conservation I have created a Facebook page name "Tunza Eco- Club, Nepal". It is my kind request to all members please like the facebook page and express your support to those aspiring students and their initiatives.

PS- Students have their exam after some days, campaigns will resume after they are done with their exams.
