[February Thematic Report] [ Environmental policy]

by Vivian Nabisere | 27-02-2023 05:39

Environmental policy

As an environmental activist and a Tunza Eco Generation ambassador to Africa, my attention is drawn to different regulations and laws concerning environmental health in Africa. Recently, one such regulation was declared in my own country, Uganda by the National Environment Management Authority, raising varying responses among Ugandan citizens.

The law is: a motorist who is caught driving a car without a dustbin in it will be arrested and fined up to six million Ugandan shillings. A similar punishment will be imposed if you throw rubbish out of your car. I believe this is an excellent move because it will reduce the incidence of plastic and litter on public roads.

Thus, public sanitation will be further improved and diseases and land pollution will be prevented. However, many vehicle owners are skeptical about it and may not be willing to comply. This maybe because there's still a gap in the general public's knowledge on dangers of  plastic litter to our environment. It may also be because people are just resistant to change, even when it is a beautiful change. The law will take effect in April 2023.
