[January Thematic Report] Reuse of used batteries

by Rethabile Makatla | 27-02-2023 16:10

Old and used batteries pose a significant threat to our environment when disposed incorrectly. Some of these old and used batteries can be reused into something new and beautiful.

One way of reusing used batteries is the energy storage systems (ESS). This method involves connecting several used batteries that are grouped in packs to build an ESS and store and use power. The benefit of this method is that power storage can be established without having to create new batteries.

The other way to reuse used batteries is through refurbishing. Batteries could be refurbished for use directly in another vehicle, potentially extending the useful life of many vehicle systems. So when a battery pack dies prematurely, functioning modules and cells can often be recombined to create refurbished battery packs for other vehicles.

Used batteries can be reused again through Do It Yourself (DIY) projects. DIY electronic recycling projects from used batteries one can do are a solar powered generator, a portable rechargeable lighting system, a portable mini fan, a cool DIY flashlight with 9V batteries, a magnet holder, and many others.

It is very important to reuse and recycle old and used batteries as it helps to conserve natural resources by reducing the need for virgin materials and reducing the energy and pollution associated with making new products.
