Environment Friendly Local Governance and Sustainable Development

by | 29-06-2015 01:14

Dear aspiring mates, today I want to share with you a recent event where I was invited as a facilitator and got chance to represent Tunza Eco- generation. Some days before the campaign I got invitation from Mr. Deepak Sharma, General Secretary of Jagriti Child and Youth Concern Nepal (Nepal) to be a facilitator for Capacity building workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction, Environment Friendly Local Governance and Sustainable Development.

After travelling for nearly 2.5 hours in a public bus, I reached the venue Daldale, Nawalaparasi Nepal on 17th June, 2015. By the time I arrived at 10 am, students had already been there in the community hall. They stared at me with curious eyes and shy at the same time. About 53 students from 11 different public schools of that locality had assembled there for four days campaign. It was the second day of the campaign and I felt so happy to see students taking responsibility for overall management of the session. They were divided into five groups with different responsibilities for each group.

Mrs. Sushila Regmi from environmental department of the municipality shared about the indicators for Environment Friendly Local Governance (EFLG) adopted by Government of Nepal since 2014 . She detailed the different indicators for eco- friendly house, school and surrounding. Then after, I shared with them the basic principles of sustainable development by giving relevant examples.  I suggested them minor behavior change for green living which makes a huge difference like saving energy at house, economic use of drinking water, waste segregation etc. Following this, I debriefed the global climate change scenario and vulnerability of Nepal. After that, student made Action Plans in groups to execute in their respective schools. Each group presented their Action Plans and commitment to implement it which will be monitored by their Eco- club. Lastly, I conducted eco- quiz and handed over brochure and Post- it of Tunza Eco- Generation along with explanation of Tunza as a CSR program of Samsung Engineering and my role and responsibilities as a regional ambassador.

In this way, I was blessed with one more fruitful day, sharing my knowledge and understanding with such energetic new generation. They even sang songs and cracked jokes in the interval for entertainment. While I was about to leave, I said "Good bye all, see you soon". As I turned to step out of the door I heard them asking loud "When? Please don't go. Can you stay with us for one more day at our home?" With eyes filled with tears of happiness I turned back and replied "For sure but some other day soon." It was 5.30 pm by the time I left and all the way to my home I recalled the moments of wonderful day with lasting smile for the love and intimacy students offered me.
