|BRAZIL| China defends trans-Amazon railway, says it will protect the environment

by Luiz Bispo | 10-06-2015 12:22

Yesterday, I have seen the movie titled "Tomorrowland". As a student in the environment engineer major, this movie inspired me a lot in terms of the messages that this movie delivers to audiences.

Here is my favorite quote of this movie,

"You've got simultaneous epidemics of obesity and starvation, explain that one. Bees butterflies start to disappear, the glaciers melt, the algae blooms. All around you the coal mine canaries are dropping dead and you won't take the hint! In every moment there's a possibility of a better future, but you people won't believe it. And because you won't believe it you won't do what is necessary to make it a reality. "

Yes, many people are not really aware of how serious our world could be at risk in near future. After I saw this movie, I found articles that Chinese company wants to build a railway across the South American continent as a way to protect environment and develop the region?s economy. The concerns in the movie become a reality. I felt sad but think what I can do for saving this beautiful property in the future.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang asserted that the $10 billion project to build the rail way in Brazil and Peru will be the benefit to our development as well as the protection of environment. Under unstable economy, this Chinese big deal is welcomed by Brazilian government.

This massive railway project will run from the Brazilian port of Santos to the Peruvian port of Ilo. The western Amazon will be cut straightly by this project. Therefore, some environmentalists have concerns that the heart of the biologically richest area, here would be in danger and be disappeared quickly. We might face the disaster such as deforestation, poaching, illegal mining, and land speculation.

It is necessary to enact the operating standards to reduce environmental damage. Otherwise, the railroad encourages road-building to extract the resource or to profit from industrial agriculture, logging, and mining.

I wish that an environment-friendly policy would be enacted by Chinese companies and Latin American governments and lead to proper training or guide applying to workers.

Lastly, I would like to share another impressive quote in the movie. In the final scene, there s saying, "The dreamers should stick together". We, all ambassadors who belong to Tunza Eco Generation, are dreamers. We believe that our small efforts make the world better place and now are under way. Happy to be here, Eco Generation where dreamers are able to be together.
