World Environment Day (WED) 2015 and My Celebration

by | 09-06-2015 01:07

"Seven billion dreams, one planet. Consume with care" was the theme for this year's WED. It is disheartening to see many events are focused for a single day and wrapped up in a day with no long lasting impact. So, I thought of celebrating the WED with a step towards sustainability and the best idea that popped up my mind was formation of TUNZA ECO- CLUB in a school. Though it was an event I planned before two months but couldn't make it then due to earthquake. Finally on June 5, my ideation came into implementation.

On 3rd June I visited the principal Mr. Bhanu Aryal of Janapriya Public School, Chitwan Nepal and discussed about the formation of Club. He was very glad to hear as he himself was a teacher of Environmental studies and ready to support in every possible way. So, on 5th June I woke up early, took a shower and then thanked god for this beautiful nature we are blessed with. At about 2pm I along with a brother and two sisters from my university walked towards the school located some kilometers away from my residence.

First of all I shared the Living Green school kit with students of Grade 9. I will be mentioning the details in World Report as it is also a monthly event for June. I handed Tunza Eco- generation's leaflet to the students followed by debriefing about Eco- generation and my responsibilities as a regional ambassador. Also, I handed an eco- bag sent by Tunza to Principal Mr. Aryal. Then after, I explained the objectives of Tunza Eco generation.

The objectives of Tunza Eco Club are to engage students actively in environmental conservation from awareness to action and foster eco- leadership in young minds so as to stimulate them towards sustainable green living. The responsibilities of Eco- club team is to publish a monthly newsletter and post in the school's notice board and conduct eco- activities in school or local community at least once in every month (conditions applied). I advised them to conduct the eco- activities on Friday or Saturday so as not to hamper academics.

After some time of mutual discussion among the students, finally Shrijana Tamang of Grade 9 was selected as president of the club along with one vice- president, one secretary and twelve core members. Principal Mr. Aryal and I will be the Patrons for the club. I gave my business card and asked them to call me anytime for any suggestions before their event.

I have promised to visit the school at least once a month and see their activities and give them feedbacks. Students looked very enthusiastic and excited because Eco- club is the first of its kind they have ever heard. I was elated to see them ready to shoulder their responsibilities with a firm commitment.

In this way, I celebrated WED with an initiation, with a hope of setting a tradition of independent  Eco- club (Eco- club in school is rare in my country Nepal) which will be handed each year to the next batch of students in school and forms a chain of sustainability.

(PS: The green band on my head symbolizes my commitment towards Green Living)
