|BRAZIL| Research of USP university to preserve jaguar in Atlantic forest

by Luiz Bispo | 07-06-2015 12:54

I used to answer "Jaguar" if somebody asked me which animal is the scariest in my life. Because I remember that I was unable to walk a step when I saw jaguar while I am helping the project of reduced impact logging in 2012 ('the intensively planned and carefully controlled implementation of timber harvesting operations to minimize the environmental impact on forest stands and soils'. It involves a number of practical measures- definition sources from ITTO webpage (International Tropical Timber Organization).

Erica Vanessa Maggiorini who studies in master degree of Forestry Science proposed jaguar research for the Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (ESALQ) of USP. This research is about the distribution of the jaguar and their species of prey in the Atlantic forest developed by the Institute Pró-Carnívoros, in partnership with the NGOs Phantera.

There are some specific areas where jaguars live. To identify three essential areas of conservation of them is an important matter in this project. To ensure their presence for a long time and make them to connect each other in their area of occurrence is the main goal of the project. In order to achieve this goal, she interviewed with 577 local residents in part of the Atlantic forest coast of the state of Sao Paulo in 181 days

This research will generate some benefits. The conservation of the Brazilian jaguar in "Mata Atlântica" ecosystem is fundamental because this species exercise an ecological function. It is a well known fact that the Brazilian jaguar is very sensitive to environmental changes. Therefore, the place where is occupied with jaguars means that it is suitable conditions for conservation.

The Atlantic forest becomes aggravating condition by human. This area used to have a rich biodiversity with various species of animals, plants and trees, however, it is concerned that extinction of the forest and the inhabitants of biome. In particular, the jaguars suffer from human hunting and being at risk of extinction, which caused a significant reduction of the species.
