Japan is one of the countries which has high risk of disaster. Japan also had experienced for devastated disaster in the past with large number of dead tolls. Learning from history, Japan today prepare disaster prevention to reduce that disaster risk. One of Japan efforts to prepare disaster prevention is establishing disaster prevention center in many cities, one of them is Sapporo Citizen Disaster Prevention Center. Sapporo Citizen Disaster Prevention Center is a public facility which is freely provided and fully supported by government to gain visitors knowledge of many kind of disasters. Visitors will get experience through simulations and practical activities. That activities are including earthquake simulation, handling fire extinguisher, smoke evacuation simulation, emergency simulation, and storm simulation corner. In the earthquake simulation, visitor will try some different types of earthquake that is ever happened in Japan, such as Kobe Earthquake, Tohoku Earthquake, Sapporo Earthquake, and so on. In this simulation, visitors have to protect their heads by covering it using pillow. After earthquake is finished, other electronic appliances and gas-using instruments are have to turned off, such as gas stove, heater, and so on. Then, in the handling of fire extinguisher, visitors try to turn off flames by spirting fire extinguisher to the virtual fire. Make sure that the aim is in the base of flame to turn it down immediately. Still, the condition that is used to happened after fire is heavy smoke. So, visitors also do a smoke evacuation simulation by entering a dark building with smoke. To protect ourselves, we have to cover our nose by our clothes, avoid to talking in the smoggy condition, and walk by lowering head position because the lower position, the less smoke density. And one thing that people usually forget to do this, close the door after open it to anticipate fire not to creep to other room. In the emergency simulation, visitors learn how to use AED (Automated External Defibrillator) instrument for emergency first aid. In japan, most of buildings are installed by AED instrument, so it is important to know how to use it. Then, In Japan storm also become one of the disasters. In the storm simulation, visitors are experiencing high velocity wind, around 30 km per second. Nobody want disaster happened, but, it is better to prevent disaster before the real disaster is coming. So, for better human being, lets we learn how to prevent disaster risk. |
