by Seoyoon Min | 18-02-2023 23:57

It has been warned that mankind could fall into a "doom loop" where we would lack resources to prevent climate change which is the cause of the disaster, to solve disasters caused by climate change. Due to climate change, the intensity and frequency of natural disasters such as floods, forest fires, and droughts are getting stronger and it is crucial that we take meaningful actions.

Although mankind has not yet completely fallen into a "ring of destruction," such signs are seen in lots of areas all around the world. According to the African Development Bank, the cost lost due to climate change is already up to 15% of per capita GDP across the continent. Last year, a flood in West Africa killed 800 people. In particular, Nigeria, which experienced the first major flood had 2,776 injured and 1.5 million homeless. Farmlands were flooded, hurting crop production as well. Scientists analyzed that global warming has increased the likelihood of a major flood in West Africa by 80 times than before. Our ecosystem will be entirely demolished if we do not make drastic changes.

Currently, scientists analyze that the concentration of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by mankind after the Industrial Revolution is more than 1 trillion tons, and the global average temperature has risen by more than 1 degree. The 1.5-degree rise, referred to as a "tipping point" where irreversible changes begin, is expected to take place within the next 10 years. We are in a phase where we have to take these problems even more seriously and work together as a whole society.
