The Youth Conference on Community Based Adaptation (CBA) to Climate Chage -Nairobi, Kenya

by | 01-05-2015 22:41

The youth conference on community based adaptation to Climate Change was held in Nairobi, Kenya this week running parallel to the 9th International Conference on Community Based Adaptation. The parallel event for the Youth during the conference came as a result of experience from the previous CBA Conferences which noted that that many young people including students, recent graduates and young researchers were interested in participating in the CBA conferences but often lacked resources to do so, additionally the fact that the conference is international means that only a small number could be accommodated within the main programme. Kenya was therefore nominated to host both conferences at the conclusion of the last 8th CBA conference in Nepal.

Under the theme "Youth as a Catalyst for enhancing Effective Adaptation'' the youth conference aimed at encouraging young people to be agents of change, particularly in addressing climate change issues in their communities including finding new ways and strategies in communicating climate change and disaster risk.

The discussion on enhancing effectiveness is considered timely, as financial resources for adaptation are likely to grow in the coming years. Keynote speech from Dr .Cosmas  Ochieng  ,one of the YouthCBA  Conference  Co-organizer noted that African future belongs to its youth  and they cannot afford to complicit in destruction of their future. Youths were urged to exercise their numbers, intellect, creativity, energy and citizenship in pursuit of sustainable development and action to combat climate change.
