Liberia's Challenges in the Celebration of World Earth Day

by | 05-05-2015 16:31

Environmental awareness in Liberia is kind of new especially in areas that are rural. I traveled up country to celebrate world earth day in Gbarnga, Bong County. It was a grand interaction with the students and it was welcomed and climaxed with the formation of Eco-Green Clubs in various High Schools in Gbarnga, Bong County which is con-going. I gave the students a synopsis of Earth Day celebration around the world and discussed the importance of Earth Day celebration.

The Earth Day is Annual celebration honoring the achievements of the environmental movement and raising awareness of the importance of long-term ecological sustainability. Earth Day is celebrated in the world on April 22 of each year.

Denis Hayes, a graduate student at Harvard University, to help organize the first Earth Day. It took place on April 22, 1970, and was designed as an ?environmental teach-in? that would educate participants in the importance of environmental conservation.

The interaction was nice and educative, and students got to know the importance of celebrating events that commemorate environmental related issues.

In Liberia, not much efforts is been made with energizing young people to get involve and advocate for the preservation of environmental values. With this, we constituted ECO-GREEN Clubs in the various schools in central Liberia and in the coming weeks, we will conduct training for them to help boost their capacity on environmental related knowledge in the country and how they can tackle issues concerned with the environment.
