Earthquake and aftermaths

by | 30-04-2015 18:05

It was mid day. Had my exams tomorrow. I was in my room preparing for next final exam. All of sudden, I trembled. I immediately took safety-measure. Kneel downed to table and tried to protect my head. But earth continued to shook for almost 2 minutes. There was the obvious fear and rise in adrenaline. I didn't let it crippled me. Gasped some air and went outside.

There were my mom and dad, my friends, neighbours all outside and horrified. We watched for each other. Luckily we were all safe and had no any human and physical damages.

We tuned into the radio and later came to know our country had experienced the earthquake of 7.9 richter scale with its centre being Lamjung. Biggest after 1934 massive earthquake in Nepal.

After half an hour, I returned back to my room. I felt blessed to know all of my relatives and friends were safe and alive.

I was dismayed when I logged into the facebook. Social media inundated with photos of catastrophic capital city. These were nerve racking. People were panic-stricken by this massive shake. Things turned from bad to worse when I came to know most of the houses in the capital got all collapsed, huge building got toppled, many people trapped into rubbles of destroyed building.

The earthquake took away our many historical and religious monuments which were the identical symbol of our national identity and culture. Bhimsen Tower Dharahara (tallest historical tower of the nation and architecture recognised by UNSECO) was all dusted. Kasthamandap, after which our capital city got its name, also got collapsed. Durbar square, Krishna Mandir (listed in World Heritagge Site by UNESCO) all tumbled. These are just few to name.

But the story didn?t end there. That's just the case of the capital city. The situation of Gorkha, Sindhupalchok and other rural districts remained unknown for many days. Moreover, frequent aftershocks of 4-6 richter scale further escalated the fear among many people.  Aftershocks lasted for 2 more days. However, the scale was lowering.

So far death toll has reached 5000+ and with than 10,000 of people being injured and millions being affected in one way or another.

Call it miracle or the cumulative result of the strong building and soils, Chitwan despite experiencing the sake of greater magnitude than other affected areas, remained unharmed with almost no loss of life and properties.

Rescue operation was started from the next day in the capital. But geographical disturbance caused delayed in the rescue operation at mid hill region.

The immediate action at least at the capital taken by the Nepal Police, Armies and rescue team from India, China, Bhutan and Pakistan is praiseworthy. We are thankful to the support from the US, Norway, South Korea, Japan, Canada, Australia and many other countries of the world for showing us the solidarity at this hard times.

By now, as I am writing, rescue operation is in full fledge at many areas even though theres still scarcity of relief team, aids and materials.

Our nation is in deep grief and dark cloud of the fear is still looming around us. But I am happy to see youths of my community and also those dwelling aborad dedicating their whole time, money and energy in collecting relief materials, funds and going to the mid hills to serve affected people. The activeness of  Lions/Leo clubs( where i am myself involved), RedCross, Rotary/Rotatract clubs in collaboration with local youths groups is overwhelming.

Humanity is the greatest religion.

Amid the crisis, national unity has further strengthened and people are supporting and helping each other in every way possible.

Saying this,  we still need more support to overcome the situation and normalise the condition.

Huge Respect to all those Police and Armies who are serving their mother land despite being unkown about their own family.

PS1 I am more than grateful to  Tunza Eco Generation for the support at this hard times.

PS2. All the Nepali E-gen Ambassador are safe.
