Earth Day 2015: Clean Khatima, Green Khatima

by Dharmendra Kapri | 30-04-2015 14:43

Earth Day is celebrated every year on the 22nd of April. In 1970, a senator from Wisconsin, USA, Gaylord Nelson first conceived of this day. The senator was worried about the rate of industrialization and the careless attitude of everyone towards our environment. It was envisaged to promote the idea of ecology, to encourage respect for life on Earth, and highlight growing concerns about different kinds of pollution. Over 20 million Americans participated in events to mark the first Earth Day and it turned out to be so contagious that today, over a billion people from all over the globe celebrate Earth Day.

But, the question arises as to why we celebrate Earth Day? It?s because we seem to have forgotten what a beautiful gift we have been given in the form of planet Earth. We also seem to have forgotten that this is our home and we need to keep it in order to stay healthy and alive.

There are millions of ways to express our environmental commitments through Earth Day. We all can do anything that is meaningful for us and for the environment.

I celebrate my Earth Day with school students and teachers.  I along with Mr. Narendra Singh Rautela (2014 Hidden Eco Hero Prize Winner) organized an awareness program for school students to aware them about some basic environmental issues. Workshop was attended by more than 100+ students and 50+ teachers. A poster competition was also organized under the theme-?What I can do to Save the Environment?. All students were really creative and suggest many ways through their posters and I am really glad to share that I had an honor to judge the senior group entries.

Our city MLA Mr. Pushkar Singh Dhami also joins us in Earth Day Celebration and requested all students to do their bit to save the Mother Earth. I gifted him an Eco-Friendly bag which was sent by Eco Generation team. He promised me that he will make our city a Plastic free city and will help us to promote these kinds of eco friendly bags. He has also initiated a Clean Khatima, Green Khatima campaign to make our city clean and green.

After that I also promoted TEG platform among the participants and gave them Tunza Eco Generation Leaflets, pens, scales. I also told them about Monthly and annual events and remind them to look at the TEG website to see wonderful work carried on by all of us.
