Every year on 22nd April, Earth Day is commemorated throughout the world as a way to raise awareness on earth's natural resources, promote and advocate for actions to be taken in order to prevent degradations of ecosystems.

Under the theme "Green Cities Campaign", yesterday I joined in the 4th Edition of Earth Race 2015 which was held at Muguga Forest in Central Province of Kenya as a way to promote and invest in cycling which will contribute to the shift from fossil-fuel based modes of transport in urban areas of Kenya .In this context, certainly this shift towards cycling as a sustainable means of transport is essential towards achieving decarbonization and improving human health and well-being.

Earth race was meant to encourage young people to adopt cycling as part of their lifestyles at the same time advocate and influence government role in creating policies and good infrastructure to support people living in urban areas,

"Cycling and walking in cities should be safe and attractive. Non-motorized transport users have equal rights and responsibilities on the road"s (UN-HABITAT). "

Muguga forest is characterized as tropical with unique variety of flora and fauna. The ecosystem contain large reserves of biomass and timber, resources for feeding increasing human and animal populations, known and unknown basic materials for medicines etc. Moreover, the forest fulfill important social and cultural functions in Kenya.

The Earth Race event attracted both professional and recreational cyclist looking for some action and adventure in the outdoors coupled with fun and exploring. It covered a distance of 50 Km for professionals and 25km for the fun race, touching different altitudes and landscapes across the country side. Under the hashtag ‪#‎earthrace2015 ‪#‎redineyourlimit , this event was organized by Pan African Climate Justice, UN-Habitat which promotes sustainable mobility among others different stakeholder .
