Racing for the Earth - Earth Day

by | 27-04-2015 06:12

Earth race is an annual cycling event held in commemoration of earth day every 22nd April. This year, during the fourth edition of the event, due to the date landing in the middle of the week, it was celebrated on Saturday the 25th to make it more accessible to people. The main aim of the race is to advocate for safe cycling while promoting environmental awareness and encouraging the adoption of cycling  within the cities to fight against increased pollution and climate change.

Racers registering

I have been volunteering with one of the organizing societies, that is Wild Life Africa, for the past 6 months and I got the opportunity to play the role of being one of the marshals along the biking trail where a little friend kept me company while I waited for the bikers to get to my checkpoint. Some people went for the 25 kilometre race while more adventurous and experienced riders went for the 50 kilometre race. It was refreshing to see entire families come to take part in the event and very challenging to see children as young as 7 and 9 ride and complete the 25km race through the rugged terrain.

Another bonus is that I got to meet my fellow Kenyan ambassador Samuel Muoria though he did not know that we did in fact meet haha. I recognized him from his picture.Hi Samuel!!! :)

It was a great event and I look forward to next year?s edition of the race. Hopefully the turnout will be even bigger and the impact stronger on our society.
