Canal Clean Up: Celebrating World Water Day

by | 28-03-2015 01:58

Residents of Makassar City cleaned polluted parts of Maccini Sombala cannal in the city to mark World Water Day. As we know, fresh water is one of the planet's most precious resources. This community event is supported by Subdistric Head of Maccini, local government, army, Horison Makassar Hotel, and residents along the canal.

Instead of being a source of beauty and freshness, the Maccini Sombala Canal is polluted by rubbish. Sometimes in hot day, it releases bad odor. As they explored the canal, litter, such as plastic, food waste and styrofoam was not hard to spot. After heavy rain the problem is greatly magnified. The behavior of local residents who use to litter around canal shows that they are unaware of the importance of clean canal. Fresh water as source of living is worth to be preserved. People will realize the importance of clean water once the lack of it but in daily life they rarely aware with water condition around them.

I hope this event is not just a ceremonial but a starting point of our awareness about water and environment by cleaning water resources and passage around us?, said Sa?adilah Mursik, Person In Charge of this action. The participants hope that this canal will be cleaner and not filled with litter.
