At that time, we, who were clustered into small groups, were assigned to visit rural Area and do some contribution to society at there. The location of our project was Kota Terpadu Sungai Rambutan, a new suburban area near to our city. We had to spend approximately one hour to reach the location by shuttle bus. From highway to the location gate, asphalt road welcomed us, after that, we had to accept asphalt road no longer our companion and dirt road began its duty to serve us. The area was relative new since it was opened by the governor in 2005, so the infrastructure development is still on going. ? Yeah! Just enjoy the show ? was our motto at that time. Our bus stopped at a big mosque on the center of village area. As we stepped down on the ground, we had to think what kind of action we would do. My team did not have any idea at all at the beginning but then, we looked surroundings and bamm!!! Litters were everywhere, even on the mosque area. Oh common, how dirty this place was! But since the area was new, perhaps the sanitation or rubbish colleting system had not run yet or even it had not made yet! I guess, before opening a new settlement, the government should plan and implement some supporting systems. It was not funny at all, no trash bins, no proper ditch, no clean water service. The society collected rain water to drink and use swamp water for washing. It was really ancient! Forgetting complains above, my team had to take actions immediately. After sightseeing and interviewing some citizens, we decided to collect litters and throw them to a proper place. Our action was quite simple compared to other teams but, as we implement our plan, some citizens, without hesitation, followed us to collect the litters. It made us happy! We did not campaign or persuade them orally to join, we only kept silence and smiled at them, but our direct action had inspired them to clean their own place. I guess, sometimes, silent campaign is more effective than oral campaign. At the end, we thanked to the citizens for their participation in our action and we encouraged them to keep paying attention or their environment cleanness. |
