Youth migration and the scenario in Nepal

by | 24-02-2015 15:02

An estimated 400,000 young people enter the labor market each year in Nepal and, in the absence of decent employment opportunities within the country, particularly in rural areas, migration to India and overseas for employment has become an increasingly attractive option as well as a last resort for many youth. The Department of Foreign Employment estimates that around 1,500 young Nepalese leave for employment to countries other than India each day.

The migration might be different with different purposes, some for studies, some for work and some for visit. As youth are the most active age group, they are considered as the pillar of the nation. The youth migration have severe impact in various sector and most importantly being agricultural country, many of the country land are left fallow due to lack of working manpower. Even in some remote part people die as they couldn't get medicine cause there is no any youth who can bring them to nearest hospital. The situation is worst especially in villages with children, elderly people and women only. Beside there is drastic increase in remittance flow  and has contributed significantly in reducing poverty from 41.8% to 25.2% just over  a decade and which is not the sustainable one. The differences we can observe in various technological device like cell phone, internet and many more, some of them are being successfully utilized in best way many enthusiastic youth which in turn contributing in nation development.

Despite, many youth are attracted in foreign countries job, where they couldn't get the good job according to their qualification and potentiality, the reason behind is country couldn't create any kind of opportunities focusing youth neither in industrial sector nor in other technological sector. We youth have qualification in our hand, but are compelled to spend time without job. There is unrest and indiscipline prevalent in the system due to high politicization, the country is facing  unemployment problem in the present scenario.

In today¡¯s increasingly globalized and interconnected world, youth represent the most interconnected generation of all. Young migrants need to be given opportunities to participate, to express themselves, to be listened to and to have opportunities created in their own land. Being youth as the most energetic and active age group, youth migration itself is a big issue for the country like Nepal.Until the country couldn't bring managed system, policies and better implementation we cannot imagine the development of country. At the same time, if we wait until  all being perfect to move,we will never move ahead.
