DRAINAGE: GOOD NEWS IN ANAMBRA STATE

by | 19-02-2015 15:03

Throughout last year, I reported many cases of poor drainage system in some parts of Nigeria.
Now, in my state of residence-Anambra state-a huge federal road construction is ongoing and the signs are really good of an improved drainage system.

The road construction is going on side by side with the drainage construction and it has been a hugely fruitful project so far.
The road in question, the Onitsha-Amansea expressway- is one with some stories.
During the raining season, some parts of that road-especially around the UNIZIK Junction- become ugly sites to behold. The drainage system there were so poor that the flood water it ought to have contained flowed on the roads damaging people's goods, stores and houses.
At a time, people lost their lives to that poor drainage system as they tripped and fell into the gutters -during rainy hours- which were entirely covered by the flood making it very difficult,if not impossible, to distinguish between the road and the drainage.

But now, adequate drainages are being provided which will be able to cater for the huge volume of flood the channel attracts.
Wide and deep, the only fear of many about the new drainages is that the government may leave it open without using concrete mixtures to cover the gutters.
I am watching patiently to see what happens and will ensure that this good news becomes complete.
With drainages on both sides of the road and even the centre, the raining season can now be welcomed in full force.
