I could remark a lot of canned food and raw food thrown out to rut. This is a big surprise to me because in a country where more than 65% of the population is considered to be living below the poverty line, such practices should not be taking place.
At the five areas of visit, I equally observed that there was a high use of Bio No degradable plastics. Bags that were banned by the April 24, 2014 decree on plastics in Cameroon. It is quite alarming because despite the warnings by the delegates of the Ministries of Trade, Forestry and Wild Life and Environment, the trade on these products still continues as if nothing was said.
The WWF living planet report of 2014 warned people to be more sustainable with the management of food and natural resources. It made us understand humans are over using the earth, rated to what one and a half our planet can contain. Yet we continue to drive restlessly to chaos.
There is need for serious consciousness about climate change and the small things we can do to stop degrading our lands. I have the impression people living in this area are under educated about the ills of their actions or simply want to stay within their conform zone. It is a petty but something must be done about it.
However, my writing of this piece is a call for general adjustment in our attitudes, we are all the keepers of this planet and it is our duty to keep it safe for the next generation. I call on everybody in Cameroon to start readjusting the way they manage their food and the lands put at their disposal. The lands are not in the making any more. We must watch out and make Cameroon a green and sustainable place.
