Global Divestment Day

Over 450 events in 60 countries, people around the world declared that it?s wrong to wreck the climate — and it?s wrong to profit from wrecking it.

In this article, I wanted to talk to all of you environmental conscious and active young ambassadors about an issue that is very relevant to what all of us are doing, and how taking this issue up to scale with your university and city might just be a good idea.

Despite the fact that divestment in really not good for the bottom line, but this day stands as a solid proof that, we as a civilization are ready and willing to move beyond just profit - motives and business as usual to thinking about the environment and the impact our actions have on climate change.

"Evidence from South Africa suggests that divestment, while ineffective in a financial sense, can have an impact by shaping public discourse."

Divestment from select fossil fuel producers would send a powerful message to the energy industry and the nation, and so this valentine's weekend - on the 13th and 14th of February, we celebrated the world's first global divestment day with activists, students and most of all - youth, came out and asked their cities, universities etc. to divest from fossil fuels and send a clear message that the environment is important and fossil fuels should stay in the ground. For example, to celebrate GDD, Harvard students are occupying the president?s office, armed with snacks, diapers, and cell phones to sustain them until President Faust agrees to meet inside and hear their demands.

In general the majority of campaigns are asking institutions to:
  • Immediately freeze any new investment in fossil fuel companies
  • Divest from direct ownership and any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds within 5 years
So it might just be an excellent idea, and make good environmental sense for everyone on this Eco-Generation Platform to ask their university and city authorities about their plans on divesting, and work on helping them make these plans.
