Innovative & Interactive Waste bin - inspires people for recycling

by | 01-02-2015 21:36

Recycling is one of the ways we can contribute towards the green movement in an individual way. In recent years this movement has gained a lot of momentum in UAE with Govt supports and various initiatives taken by many agencies working within UAE.

We have seen many waste bin have been put in many residential areas so that people can just go out of their houses and dump their day to day segregated waste in separate bins for different materials. It is very clear that recycling will be a success only if  residents are feeling pride in doing the same and make this as a habit.

Masdar Institute with the help of a local manufacturing agency has come up with an interactive waste bin which will tell us various information as and when we recycle something.  Few examples are :

a)      ?By recycling a plastic bottle you saved enough energy to run your fridge for over 2 hours without having any negative impact on our environment?

b)      ?You have saved enough energy to browse on your laptop for 45 minutes? – when you recycle an aluminum can

Normally there is a lot of information in media on climate change and ozone layer depletion etc. that may not be digestible to all people, and  a positive messaging is very important to convey the idea. The bin will not tell what to do and what not to do. It will tell us the impact of your actions in daily life. The basic idea is : When you begin to understand the impact of personal action, the people will be excited.

The steel bin that segregates the waste at source for recycling can add many more electronic features including real time alerts on the quantity of waste and the bin?s remaining capacity by twitter or email. As per the last information received, the prototype of the bin is ready and the manufacturers are expecting orders from the market for commercial production.

Lets wait for the green innovation which inspires the doable green revolution at the personal level?
